The fresco of Leda and the swan, Regio V, Pompeii. A valuable fresco resembling the myth of Leda and the swan has resurfaced During the stabilization and reprofiling works of the excavation fronts, in a cubicle (bedroom) of a Roman domus that faced the eastern side of via del Vesuvio. The environment that preserves the painting is placed next to the entrance corridor where the fresco of the Priapus had already been identified, similar to that of the nearby Casa dei Vettii. The scene represents the sexual conjunction between Jupiter, transformed into a swan, and Leda, wife of Tyndareus king of Sparta, from which the twins Castor and Pollux (the Dioscuri), Elena and Clitennestra were born. This iconography, full of sensuality, seems to resume the sculptural model of Timotheus, an important greek sculptor of the fourth century BC. ๐ธ๐น๐ธ๐น๐ธ๐น๐ธ๐น๐ธ๐น๐ธ๐น๐ธ๐น๐ธ๐น๐ธ ๐ธ Photo by @massimo_osanna @pompeii_parco_archeologico ๐ธ๐น๐ธ๐น๐ธ๐น๐ธ๐น๐ธ๐น๐ธ๐น๐ธ๐น๐ธ #pompei #pompeii #domus #romandomus #antiqua_archeologia ๐ #archeology #archeologia #heritage #archeologiaromana #archaeology #art #romanfresco #fresco #affresco #leda #romanpainting #ledaandtheswan #zeus #heritage #beniculturali #discovery #archeologicaldiscovery #pompeiidiscovery

The Palace of Knossos, Crete, Greece. The palace of Knossos is the largest of the Minoan palaces and was raised in the 16th century BC on the ruins of an older building built in 2000 BC and probably destroyed by an earthquake around 1628 BC, due to the volcanic eruption of Thera (today Santorini island). The new complex includes an area of โโ22,000 square meters, it was multi-storey and very complex and intricate. It could host up to 12,000 people and contained 1,300 rooms, worship and banqueting halls, housing for the king, the queen, and the administration officials. The palace was so large and its complex planimetry was mentioned as a maze in the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. The palatial structure, endowed with sacred character, as well as political and economic, was devoid of defensive walls; which is evidence of Cretan hegemony on the Aegean Sea and the total absence of invasions by other peoples. ๐ธ๐น๐ธ๐น๐ธ๐น๐ธ๐น๐ธ๐น๐ธ๐น๐ธ๐น๐ธ๐น ๐ธ Photo by @antiktarih ๐ธ๐น๐ธ๐น๐ธ๐น๐ธ๐น๐ธ๐น๐ธ๐น๐ธ #greece #crete #creta #palaceofknossos #cnosso #architecture #architettura #antiqua_archeologia ๐ #archeology #archaeology #worldheritage

๐ฎ๐น Domus di Paquius Proculus, Regio I, Insula 7, nยฐ 1, Pompei. Domus of Paquius Proculus, Regio I, Insula 7, nยฐ 1, Pompeii. The Pompeian domus of Paquius Proculus, dating back to the 2nd century BC, is built on three floors. At the entrance of the house is preserved the famous mosaic depicting a dog tied to the chain in front of a half-open door; a popular subject in Pompeii as a symbol of housing protection. The Tuscan atrium, on the other hand, is entirely covered with a mosaic floor decoration extends around the impluvium and recalls the pattern of a coffered ceiling. This mosaic is among the largest and best preserved in Pompeii and is composed of geometric panels with polychrome animals of various kinds, alluding to prosperity, oars, rudders and two portraits; one male, the other female. From the atrium a wooden staircase led to the upper floor consisting of two rooms, one of which overlooked the atrium and another one on the peristyle from where, perhaps, the landlord enjoyed the view of the Lattari Mountains.
